Hi everyone , welcome to the website that can help you improve your singing skills . My name is Andrew , i've been singing for 8 years . I have participated in many singing contests and have earned lots of experience through them . I am going to show you simple and effective ways to help you sing better . I am not a professional singer , but i am very confident that i can help beginners improve their singing with the following techniques .
Picture of me and my friends performing with Eason Chan last year , one of the most famous singer in Hong Kong .

First of all , insufficient warm-up and lack of daily vocal exercices are main reasons that make you have difficulties in your singing . Vocal cords are like muscles , they can get stronger with proper use and they can get weaker with lack of use . Also , you can damage them with improper use of them . In a same way , an Olympic athlete has to be in a very good shape to run that race . We singers have to be in a good vocal shape to hit that high note or to get that scream that we want without killing our voices . It begins with daily warm-ups !! People really underestimate just how powerful a daily vocal warm-up can be . Just 15-20 minutes of warm-ups can a make a world of difference on how you sing . I'm telling you right away , the secret of singing is PRACTICE !! Your singing will never improve if you don't take the time to practice everyday.
It has been 4 months till now that i started taking singing lessons to improve my voice and singing techniques . For the first 6 classes , all i did was practicing vocal warm ups and exercises to free my voice . The cost of 6 classes is 240$ , but it was totally worth it because it was really effective .
Here are some notes that i took from my singing lessons that are very helpful .
Sing with Your Diaphragm and Not Your Throat
If you sing using your throat, it’ll end up being sore and it doesn’t sound as nice when you sing using your diaphragm. Also, you will notice you can hold the notes or sing longer phrases without breathing difficulties.
Try this: Inhale and exhale deeply and slowly. When you inhale, your abdomen expands and when you exhale it contracts. Practice this many times. Place your hands on the sides of your waist. Feel your abdomen as it expands and contracts.
Breathing Properly
The most important thing you should know about learning how to sing better is to breathe properly. This is the basic foundation technique. If you observe, the note that you sing is carried as your breath flows in and out of your mouth. The more you are able to control your breathing, the more control you will have when you sing. If your breath is even and steady, your vocal tone will be strong and smooth. If your airflow is uncontrolled and inconsistent, your voice will sound like that too.
Correct singing posture
In order to create a loud volume and produce a beautiful tone the volume chambers in your head and your stomach have to be relaxed.
The most common way for inexperienced singers to correct their singing posture is to "stand straight". You should avoid such generalizations at any cost because standing straight causes tension in many body parts. And what’s singers worst enemy? It’s tension!
The most important point about good posture is to stand relaxed and natural. Just be sure that your natural posture is not influenced by your modern living standard like sitting all day long in front of a computer.
.
Checklist for singing posture
*Place your chin about parallel to the floor
*Make sure to breathe through the stomach and not through your breast. Practice this by holding your hand on your stomach, breathe natural and your stomach should move up and down slowly.
*Your hands should be at the side of your body. Don’t brandish around with your hands, legs or any other body part.
*Don’t lock in your knees. Keep them loose and relaxed but never squat (that would look funny eh?).
*Avoid rising your shoulders. Keep them down and back but hold your chest high.
*Place one of your foots a bit apart in order to balance your body weight slightly forward.
*If you feel tension or pain in any muscle parts you are either standing in a wrong posture or one of your body parts is hurt. Do not sing when you have a large wound or some of your muscles are cracked.
*Keep your neck loose, relax it! Do the same with your back muscles.
*Try to move fluently. Like when you are dancing. If you can’t dance (you know it when you can’t dance trust me) try to join a karate club or train any other self defense sport. Usually they will help you to exercise fluent movement.
Always keep your correct posture even when you are not singing because this will help you to adopt the good position and also protect your body from injuries.
Exercises to control your posture
* Place a book at the middle of your head. Stand in front of a mirror and try to move your head to the left and to the right without losing your chin level and keep your movements smooth. You want to look your audience into their eyes while singing right?
* Sing in really bad posture and then sing the same song in good posture. Notice the difference!
Singing high notes
#1
Warm up your voice. I can’t express how important that is. Without proper vocal warm up exercises used before you practice or perform on stage you can easily damage your voice and your vocals will sound ugly.
#2
Care about your vocal health. If you want to reach and sing high notes your voice needs to be healthy and in it’s best condition.
#3
You have to know which muscles produce the sound you are craving for. Inside your throat there are two membranes stretched horizontally across the larynx. That are your vocal folds (often also called vocal cords). If your vocal cords vibrate you are producing sounds (no matter if you are humming, singing or speaking).
The vocal cords have the great ability to zip together to allow you to sing higher notes. If they are "open" you are going to produce deep notes and the more they "close" the higher your sound becomes.
So everything you have to do in order to learn singing high notes is to zip up your vocal cords.
#4
If your voice breaks constantly there could be two reasons. Either your vocal cords can’t hold together anymore and your voice shifts into falsetto (light airy sound) or you are producing too much tension.
Often the way to solve both problems is to reduce tension by using basic exercises like vocal warm ups or standing in the right posture or reducing the air pressure. Yep if you want to sing high notes you will need LESS air then you would use to sing deeper notes.
The more your vocal cords zip up the smaller the gap between them and the more air you pressure through the folds the faster they have to vibrate. Yet if they vibrate 250 times per second everything is fine but if you shoot too much air through them and they suddenly have to vibrate 500 times each second they are going to "break" and switch into falsetto (to protect your voice). That’s what most singers recognize as a break in their voice.
So lower your air pressure and reduce tension! Also don’t be surprised when you suddenly lose the "singing feel" in your throat because in order to produce high notes you will sing through the resonance chambers in your head and not in your mouth or throat.
#5
If you still can’t sing high notes try to sing scales and use easy to sing words like "mom", "gug", "go", "now", "goo" or "no" they have a special throat opening effect and will help you to hit higher notes more easily .
Singing in the right key
For those who are unable to catch the pitches that are being played in the practice music, or who are unable to sing in a correct tune at all, try to hum before you sing the note that you need.
Just play a certain note on a musical instrument (either a piano, guitar, keyboard etc.) and keep that note sustained while you try to hum to the correct pitch.
Once you are certain that the resonating from the instrument matches the sound that you are humming in your head, then just open your mouth and sing that note out using an 'Ah' syllable.
This should help you to get the correct pitch most of the time!
Vocal Exercises
Stand with your shoulders relaxed, arms by your side.
Breath in slowly.
Sing one note, holding the note for as long as you can without becoming short of breath.
Do NOT suck in your stomach!
Repeat the exercise with different notes using doh, ray, me, far, so, la, te, doh.
Use different mouth shapes and vowels like "ooh", "ee", "a" and "aah"
Try singing up and down a scale (called an arpeggio).
Sing short notes (known as Staccato) as well as long ones.
You could find midi scales online .
Sing phrases to improve diction: Examples:-
'I really love to sing' (going up the scale)
'Do,re,me,fa,so,la,te,do'
'La, Lo, Le, Lo'
'Ma, Mo, Me, Mo'
'Ta, To, Te, To'
'Hi, He, Ha, Ho, Hu'
'Qua, Quo, Que, Quo'
'Fluffy Floppy Puppy'
'Lolli, lolli, lolli, lolli pop'
'Bring back the boys big brown blue baseball bats'
'Sally saw silvester stacking silver saucers side by side'
(c-e-d-f-e-g-f-a-g-b-a-c--b-d-c up the scale then down the opposite way)
To feel the difference between raised and normal positioning of the larynx, place your fingers gently on your throat and try to talk as if you were a child or use 'baby talk'.
The point of daily vocal exercises is to develop a routine which you carry out daily and learn how to exercise your voice properly. I really recommend beginners to find a vocal teacher . But you should really practice the basics of singing that i have mentioned above and vocal exercises at home for at least 5-6 weeks before taking singing lessons . You could really save some money by practicing by your own first . By then , you already have trained yourself the basics of singing . So your teacher can teach you more advanced vocal techniques and guide you with the songs that you would like to sing .
